A diamond of unparalleled beauty has been nicknamed “Beating Heart” by a manufacturer in Diamond City, Arkansas, USA, reports the Times of India, “based on the initial feelings experienced upon seeing the stone.” This 0.329-carat stone, discovered in its rough state in October 2022 by VD Global Jewelry, one of the most influential companies in the diamond manufacturing sector operating from Surat and Mumbai, contained another smaller piece trapped inside. This tiny diamond, estimated to weigh 0.02 carats, has just made history.

What Does This Diamond Reveal According to Experts?
“While examining rough stones at our factory in Surat, we found this rare diamond which had another smaller piece trapped inside but moving freely, something we had never encountered before,” said Vallabh Vaghasiya, Chairman of VD Global.

The piece was then sent to the Dee Beers factory, a South African diamond conglomerate founded in 1888, in Maidenhead (UK) for more detailed analysis using optical and electron microscopes, the media reports.

What Does the Electronic Analysis Reveal?

Initial findings provided by the diamond expert indicate that an intermediate layer of poor-quality diamond was etched away during its journey to the Earth’s surface, leaving only the higher-quality material: the outer diamond and the heart. Furthermore, the “Beating Heart” would join a small group of similar natural diamonds, such as the Matryoshka diamond from Siberia, which was first recorded in 2019.

What Role Will This Discovery Play in the Search for Rare Diamonds?
“I have never seen anything like the ‘Beating Heart’ in my three decades in the diamond sector,” said Samantha Sibley, a technical educator within the group.

For her colleague Jamie Clark, Global Operations Manager at De Beers, this discovery is crucial.

“A discovery like this shows why the formation and origin of natural diamonds is such a fascinating area of study and why it is important to strive to advance the testing and analysis that can contribute to our knowledge of natural diamond growth,” he explained.
