World’s Largest Sapphire Cluster Found

A unique incident has emerged from Sri Lanka. A massive and precious sapphire cluster weighing about 510 kilograms was found in the backyard of a businessman’s house while digging a well. It is being reported as the world’s largest sapphire.
According to experts, the value of this sapphire in the international market will be approximately 7.5 billion rupees (10 million US dollars).

According to Sri Lankan authorities, this incident occurred in the Ratnapura area of Sri Lanka. Excavation work for a well was underway behind the house of a precious gem trader, Dr. Gamage, when this sapphire was suddenly found. This 2.5 million-carat sapphire weighs approximately 510 kilograms.

“During the well digging at my house, the workers found this sapphire cluster and informed me. Later, we extracted it from there,” said Dr. Gamage.
Named ‘Serendipity Sapphire’

Experts have named this sapphire the ‘Serendipity Sapphire’, which means ‘a sapphire found by luck’.

“I have never seen such a large sapphire before. It was probably formed about 400 million years ago,” said renowned gemologist Dr. Gamini Zoysa.
Potential Boost for Sri Lanka’s Gem Industry

Experts believe that this sapphire cluster could act as a lifeline for Sri Lanka’s gem industry. It is noted that due to the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns, the local gem industry has suffered significant losses over the past year. People associated with the gem industry expressed hope that this sapphire found here would once again attract international buyers towards Sri Lanka’s gem industry.

“The sapphire cluster found here is very special. Perhaps it is the world’s largest sapphire, and looking at its size and value, we believe it will draw the attention of international experts and museums back towards Sri Lanka,” said Tilak Weerasinghe, Chairman of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka.
