【Tarare, Fran】”Sometimes, you find little treasures”

Editor’s Note

This article highlights an upcoming opportunity for residents of Tarare and Thizy-les-Bourgs to have their art objects professionally appraised for free by the auction house Rossini on November 25. It underscores the institution’s effort to bring its expertise directly into local communities.

Free Appraisal Day for Art Objects

The auction house Rossini will organize a day of free appraisals for art objects on Monday, November 25 in Tarare and Thizy-les-Bourgs.

Bringing Expertise to Local Communities

Based in the Drouot district of Paris, the leading national sales hub with direct access to the international art market, Rossini is accustomed to decentralizing its services. Following Saint-Étienne, Roanne, Montbrison, and Feurs, two specialists—Olivier Nuzzo-Revol, Deputy General Manager of the firm, and Laurent Aubanel, the local correspondent and expert in antiques and art objects—will offer free appraisals of the most valuable items in Tarare and Thizy-les-Bourgs.

“We are not coming with the approach of saying we appraise this or that specific thing. Our mission is more of a local service. The objective is to go to towns where there is no auctioneer and to appraise the things people bring us,” shares Olivier Nuzzo-Revol.

This appraisal is done without obligation. It’s a good opportunity to rummage through your drawers or attic, as Rossini is not looking for specific objects.

From Appraisal to Auction

After scheduling an appointment with the team of specialists, interested individuals can come with their objects. Following these appointments, those who wish to present items for sale that the house has appraised with them can entrust them to be sold at auction. Rossini will transport these items to Paris, to the Drouot auction district where its offices and salesroom are located. Conversely, they can just as well keep them after learning their value.

“From the appraisal, and if the person agrees to sell, we take care of everything,” emphasizes the auction house. “From preparing the catalog, through the sale, to post-sale. The advantage is that the object will be sold in one of our departments (paintings and drawings, numismatics, jewelry…), which represents a guarantee for the seller that their item may interest a collector.”

However, only collectible items with a value of at least 100 euros are accepted by the auction house.

Jewelry and Fine Wines in High Demand

Generally, this day is successful, with 20 to 30 people making the trip. And the range of objects presented is very wide.

“Generally, we mainly encounter jewelry or gold pieces,” confides the Deputy General Manager. “But sometimes, we find little treasures that were sleeping in drawers or the attic. Especially in Tarare, an industrial city, where we appraise fascinating objects.”

Last year, several beautiful dolls were spotted by the experts, while a fine Reverso watch was sold for 7,000 euros.

“We also had a nice diamond line bracelet appraised between 8,000 and 20,000 euros, or a mosaic medallion that sold for 25,000 euros, but also bottles of wine and Asian objects.”

Currently, the top of the auction market concerns fine wines, “especially from Burgundy and the Rhône Valley, which are supported by young and foreign buyers,” but also jewelry and precious stones, “thanks to a high gold price,” 20th-century contemporary art, and design.
