The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a raid on two jewelry establishments in Haridwar’s Jwalapur area following a complaint of fake hallmarking. The operation underscores ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and protect consumer interests.

BIS Raid in Haridwar: Raid on Two Jewelry Establishments in Jwalapur

The Dehradun branch of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a major enforcement drive in the Jwalapur area of Haridwar following a complaint of fake hallmarking. During this operation, two jewelry establishments were searched and thoroughly inspected. BIS clarified that such campaigns will continue regularly to maintain transparency in the hallmarking system and protect consumer interests.

A BIS team conducted an inspection campaign at two jewelry establishments named Jahangir and Badshah in Jwalapur. Officials meticulously examined hallmarking-related equipment, documents, and other technical evidence on the spot.

During the search, a cutting machine was also recovered. BIS has retained this machine for further technical examination and testing. The entire matter is being investigated under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and related rules. Necessary action will be taken as per regulations after the investigation is complete.

Fake Hallmarking Action: BIS Focus on Protecting Consumer Interests

Joint Director of BIS Dehradun, Sachin Chaudhary, said that the organization is fully committed to maintaining the credibility of the hallmarking system across the country and ensuring consumers can shop with confidence. He appealed to all jewelers to get gold jewelry hallmarked only from BIS-authorized hallmarking centers and to fully comply with all legal regulations.

BIS Care App Update: Now Photo and Weight of Jewelry Visible via HUID

Joint Director Sachin Chaudhary informed that a new feature has been added to the BIS Care App from June 1, 2026. Now, when consumers verify the 6-digit HUID of any gold jewelry item, they can also see the photo and weight of that jewelry. This new feature will make it easier to identify whether the jewelry being purchased was actually issued for that specific HUID. This will significantly reduce the possibility of fake hallmarking.

Gold Jewellery Buyers Alert: Must Check HUID Before Purchase

BIS has appealed to all consumers to verify the 6-digit HUID on the BIS Care App before purchasing gold jewelry. They should also match the photo and weight displayed in the app with the actual jewelry. If any discrepancy is found between the HUID information and the jewelry being purchased, consumers should immediately report it to BIS. According to officials, this simple process will prove highly effective in preventing fake hallmarking and consumer fraud.

BIS News: Campaigns to Continue to Curb Fake Hallmarking

The Bureau of Indian Standards has made it clear that such enforcement campaigns will be conducted regularly in the future to maintain transparency in the hallmarking system, strengthen consumer trust, and strictly curb fake hallmarking. BIS’s objective is to ensure that only certified and safe hallmarked jewelry is sold in the market.
