This report details a BIS crackdown on two Haridwar jewelry shops for suspected fake hallmarking, underscoring ongoing enforcement under the BIS Act, 2016.
Dehradun, July 9, 2026: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Dehradun branch office, has conducted a major operation in the Jwalapur area of Haridwar following complaints of fake hallmarking. Under this, two prominent jewelry establishments were searched and inspected. The campaign was carried out under the BIS Act, 2016.
The BIS team conducted detailed inspections at two jewelry establishments named Jahangir and Badshah in Jwalapur. During the operation, hallmarking equipment, records, and other evidence were thoroughly examined. A cutting machine was also seized, which has been kept under BIS surveillance for further technical investigation.
BIS has clarified that this action was taken under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and related rules. Necessary legal action will be taken as per regulations after the investigation is complete. BIS assured that any irregularities will not be tolerated.
Sachin Chaudhary, Joint Director of BIS Dehradun, stated that a significant feature has been added to the BIS Care App since June 1, 2026. Now, consumers can scan the 6-digit HUID to also view the photo and weight of the jewelry. This makes it easier to ensure that the jewelry being purchased is the same for which the HUID was issued.
