This article details the upcoming auction of “The Enigma,” a 555.55-carat black diamond that holds a Guinness World Record. Its origins remain a mystery, adding to the intrigue of this rare carbonado gem.

Weighing 555.55 carats, the black diamond named “The Enigma” is set to change hands at an auction. This gemstone is a record-breaker. “The Enigma,” which translates to “The Puzzle,” weighs 555.55 carats, earning it a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. The name is fitting, as little else is known about the stone—neither where it was found nor who the current owner is.

What is known is that it is a carbonado. Expert Aaron Celestian, a mineral specialist at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, commented on Wednesday in Los Angeles, where the stone was displayed:

Experts suspect the black diamond is between 2.6 and 3.8 billion years old and may have been formed by a meteorite impact. The auction house Sotheby’s expects the stone to fetch around five million US dollars. The auction will take place exclusively online and concludes on February 9th. Adding to the mystery of “The Enigma,” Sotheby’s will also accept cryptocurrencies for the purchase at this auction.
“The Enigma” will be sold purely online at Sotheby’s. The diamond is expected to command a price of around five million US dollars. It’s not just its size that makes it so valuable.
