**Editor’s Note:** This article clarifies the updated cash purchase limit for metals and jewelry in Mexico, set at 3,210 UMAs (376,565.10 pesos) for the current year, under anti-money laundering regulations.
The Tax Administration Service (SAT) maintains strict oversight of high-value transactions. For this year, the maximum limit for purchasing jewelry with cash is 3,210 UMAs. Calculating this figure with the current value of the Unit of Measurement and Update (UMA), the exact limit is set at 376,565.10 Mexican pesos. This regulation stems from the Federal Law for the Prevention and Identification of Operations with Resources of Illicit Origin, commonly known as the Anti-Money Laundering Law.
The primary objective of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) is to prevent money of illicit origin from entering the formal economy through the purchase of luxury goods. This restriction applies nationwide, regardless of whether the transaction occurs in a prestigious boutique or a private sale. When the value of the piece exceeds the permitted limit, the buyer is required to pay the excess using traceable methods, such as bank transfers or credit cards.
It is essential to understand that splitting payment into multiple cash installments does not circumvent the law, as the total transaction amount is counted. To avoid setbacks when purchasing these goods, experts recommend following a series of safe and transparent practices.
Complying with these regulations when purchasing jewelry with cash not only frees you from severe fines but also provides legal certainty for your assets in the long term.
