【Surf City, N】Gemini Jewelry Designs: A Pearl of Surf City

Editor’s Note

**Editor’s Note:** This article highlights Gemini Jewelry Designs’ decade-long celebration of beach-inspired elegance, featuring a recent Trunk Show with Sophia By Design. It underscores the shop’s role in preserving Long Beach Island memories through curated jewelry.

Celebrating a Decade of Beach-Inspired Elegance

At Gemini Jewelry Designs, beach-inspired and unique jewelry is displayed within glass cases, curated to help customers remember their visits to Long Beach Island long after they’ve returned home. On July 9, the shop hosted an exclusive evening Trunk Show featuring the curated jewelry of Sophia By Design, along with refreshments and gifts for attendees.

According to its website, Sophia By Design aims to create an elegant jewelry experience for trend-savvy women, offering high-quality pieces through hand-selected boutiques. Founded in 1987, the brand has consistently delivered exquisite designs for every occasion, from beach outings to black-tie events.

From Craft Shows to a Full-Service Jewelry Store

For owner Marianne Seabert, the inspiration for Gemini Jewelry Designs came from years of attending craft shows with her family. She recalled a moment when her daughter wanted a bracelet but they couldn’t afford it, leading her to take a jewelry-making class at Michaels.

“When my daughter was little, we had gone to a craft show, and there was a bracelet that she was interested in, and we didn’t have a lot at that time. So I went to Michaels and took one of their jewelry-making classes, and together we made the bracelet,” she said.
“From there, I took more classes because it ended up being something that I enjoyed: putting jewelry together and making some unique patterns. We started doing our own craft shows, both juried and non-juried, throughout New Jersey and some in Pennsylvania.”

The turning point came when she read an article about Ciao Bella Jewelry closing after decades in business.

“I stood up from the table and was like to my husband, ‘What do you think about owning a jewelry store?’ and he, being ever supportive, said to me, ‘Why not? Let’s go find out,'” Marianne recalled.
Evolving Beyond Expectations

“We try to bring in new companies each year just to try to keep things fresh and exciting, and that is part of what the Trunk Show (was) about, too. We (introduced) Sophia By Design … and it is really the next step for us into fine jewelry that we didn’t expect to be in when we first got into this. We thought we were going to be a nice beach jewelry shop, but we had no idea that we were going to be doing repairs, no idea that we were going to be doing custom orders.”

Gemini Jewelry Designs offers something for everyone, from handmade designs to engagement rings and custom pieces, with options for various budgets. They also provide in-house and local repair services.

“What makes us unique in our area is that we have almost turned into a full-service jewelry store to the point where we are doing jewelry repairs,” she said.
“I would like to get to the point where we have a jewelry repair person on staff. We are not quite there yet, but that is a goal. And I would like to get to the point where we are open year ’round. Right now we are closed during the winter … but I do some private appointments sometimes during that time.”
“I could never have imagined reaching 10 years; I am shocked, honestly, but also so happy to continue to be part of this community,” Seabert added.
A Family Affair

Named after the fact that both Marianne and her daughter are Geminis with a pearl birthstone, and her son is a Gemini with an emerald birthstone, Seabert hopes Gemini Jewelry Designs remains a one-of-a-kind shop on the Island for years to come. For Andrew, the store has given as much to his family as they have given to it.
