**Editor’s Note:** This piece explores the serendipitous reunion of childhood friends Iris de La Villardière and Thomas Montier Leboucher, whose shared journey in the jewelry industry led to the founding of Viltier in 2020. Their personal story of reconnection now shapes the brand’s signature collection, ahead of its Haute Couture Week debut.
In a twist of fate, former childhood friends Iris de La Villardière and Thomas Montier Leboucher were reunited at just the right time. After losing touch for decades, the universe reintroduced them when they were both working in the jewelry industry, wondering what to do next. Once their line of fine jewelry—Viltier—came to fruition in 2020, their origin story went on to inspire the signature collection. After all, true gems will always be drawn back to one another if the connection is there. For the first time ever, the polished pair presented their pieces during Haute Couture Week in Paris this past month before hosting a chic luncheon at Hôtel Le Bristol. It was the perfect time to hear how they style their precious jewelry for any and all occasions, whether morning, noon, or night.
Thomas: I’d define my style as preppy meets casual—my usual look is an oversized shirt with a nice color, pattern, or stripe, a pair of well-cut jeans or trousers, and some Vans, with Viltier jewelry to give a daytime look an elevated accent. I love to throw on a chic jacket too, but always remaining laid-back.
Iris: My everyday uniform is usually straight-leg blue jeans, a white shirt, a beige or brown blazer, and loafers with my Viltier yellow gold jewelry. I genuinely enjoy getting dressed, even if I’m not seeing anyone. It sets the tone for my day and makes me feel like myself.
Iris: A black blazer is my forever staple. I particularly love my Dior Bar jacket; it instantly elevates any look. I also always reach for my bag from The Row and a few diamond pieces. They’re classics that I wear year after year.
Iris: Definitely a great pair of earrings. Jewelry is always a conversation starter for me. It’s often the first thing I noticed and I love that each piece always carries a story.
When you want to feel confident—what boxes does your outfit need to tick?
Thomas: I have this one Ralph Lauren jacket in navy corduroy that just goes with everything in my closet. I have had it for years now and it’s my go-to when I don’t know what to wear and I want to look cool.
Iris: Feeling comfortable is everything to me. I hate feeling awkward in an outfit—I will genuinely go home and change. I don’t like feeling overdressed or underdressed, so I always try to find that perfect balance. A great pair of shoes can instantly make me feel more confident. I also love wearing a new piece I’ve just bought.
A breakfast event pops up. What’s a failsafe outfit you might turn to for an early morning occasion when you want to feel polished?
Thomas: I’d go for a light blue shirt, untucked, either by Charvet or Rubirosa, with some vintage Levi’s, and a pair of black leather moccasins—G.H Bass if you’re on a budget or Lobb, for a splurge.
Iris: In the summer, I tend to dress in a more feminine way. I’d probably wear a breezy dress in neutral tones and a beautiful pair of sandals. When it’s colder, I’d go for straight-leg jeans, a light blue shirt, a pair of slingbacks, and a suede jacket.
What type of dress code fills you with dread? And what’s your workaround for that?
Thomas: A dress code that seems out of touch with the place or the kind of reception. Like black tie at a chill seaside place! I have no workaround for it, though, besides not showing up…
What are your thoughts on costume parties? All in with the DIY, or politely decline?
Thomas: I love costume parties if the theme is thoughtful and if you are sure guests will go 100%. I don’t like when they are half-way done. The host must also make sure to go fully out!
Iris: I’m with Thomas on this one; I love fully embracing a costume party when I feel that everyone is really getting into it. I genuinely love dressing up and seeing myself in completely different styles.
The 5 p.m. slump has hit, but a dinner party is on the cards. What will energize you when shifting from day to night?
Thomas: A good shower; it really feels like I am turning the page on the day I just had.
Iris: I usually need a little refresh to transition from day to night. My magic trick is applying some moisturizer under my eyes before touching up my makeup; it instantly brings everything back to life without having to start over. I might also change into a pair of heels to add a different energy to the look, and of course, putting on some great music always helps.
You’ve no time to think about what to wear for an after-work gathering but you want to feel chic: what outfit formula always works for you in a bind?
Iris: A pair of dark-wash jeans, black pumps, and a tailored blazer never fails. Depending on the mood, I’ll wear a simple top underneath or button the blazer and wear it on its own.
What about black tie? Do you like to take risks, or play it pretty safe?
Thomas: I go classic, classic, classic. If it’s black tie, it’s for a reason! The only extravagance I allow myself is a beautiful diamond brooch with nice cufflinks.
Iris: I tend to play it pretty safe. I love the elegance of a long gown paired with beautiful accessories. That said, I’m not against taking risks. It really depends on the event, what I find, and whether I feel inspired by the occasion. When everything aligns, I’m always open to trying something a little more unexpected.
What after-dark pieces get the most wear in your wardrobe, year after year?
