The main reason for the increase in precious metal prices is the rising demand for safe investments amid declining US consumer confidence and geopolitical uncertainties. According to the Conference Board, the US Consumer Confidence Index for January fell to 84.5, significantly lower than forecasts. Additionally, the market is also watching the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting and signals regarding future interest rates.
A strong surge was seen in the global energy market on January 28 due to the combined effects of extreme weather in the US and rising geopolitical tensions.
At market close, Brent crude oil prices increased by $1.98 (3.02%) to $67.57 per barrel. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices also closed up by $1.76 (2.9%) at $62.39 per barrel.
Furthermore, global supply is tightening as the recovery of the Tengiz oil field (Kazakhstan) after an incident is slower than expected, and OPEC+ is likely to further postpone production increase plans at its meeting scheduled for early February.
