A major theft case has come to light in Surat, Gujarat. Unidentified thieves stole diamonds worth ₹25 crore from the polishing and export unit of a diamond company located in Surat. The thieves used a gas cutter to break open a metal safe to extract the precious gems. This information was provided by the police on Monday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Alok Kumar stated that the incident occurred between August 15 and 17 at the office-cum-polishing unit of DK & Sons Diamond Company in the Kapodara area of the city. During this time, CCTV cameras were destroyed.
He explained that since the company had declared a three-day holiday in view of Independence Day and Janmashtami, neither any employees nor security guards were present at the unit when the diamonds were stolen. Kumar said that taking advantage of this situation, the thieves first broke the main door of the office located on the ground floor of the company’s building and then went to the third floor, where a metal safe was kept. Subsequently, they cut open the safe using a gas cutter.
He stated that the owner of the diamond unit learned about the theft when he arrived at the office on Monday morning, three days later. The DCP said that according to preliminary estimates, the thieves fled with diamonds worth ₹25 crore. They vandalized the CCTV cameras to destroy evidence and also stole the video recorder. He said that efforts to apprehend the criminals are ongoing.
