【France】Cosmed Enhances Traceability and Security of Its Over-the-Counter Certificates

Editor’s Note

This article outlines Cosmed’s new system for issuing Certificates of Free Sale (CVL), a crucial document for exporting cosmetics to numerous non-EU markets. The update aims to streamline the certification process for its members in response to evolving international trade requirements.

Cosmed Adopts New System for CVL Certificates

The Certificate of Free Sale (CVL) is an official document required by authorities in 69 countries outside the European Union as a condition for importing finished cosmetic products into their markets. Issued by Cosmed—an industry association representing French cosmetic companies with 1,030 members—the CVL certifies that the listed cosmetics comply with EU Regulation No. 1223/2009 and are therefore marketable within the EU.

In response to growing challenges in transparency and security, Cosmed is implementing a new system to enhance the traceability of CVLs and prevent tampering.

“With this innovative technology incorporating blockchain, each certificate can be instantly verified on a smartphone without downloading any mobile application, thereby limiting fraud risks and ensuring the integrity of the document throughout the export chain,” said Cosmed.

The Cosmed CVL is immediately verifiable through official certification and features anti-tampering protection. Customs and health authorities can instantly check whether a submitted document matches the original issued by Cosmed via a QR code, streamlining the process.

Eco-Responsible Blockchain Technology

Furthermore, this innovation is based on Sorga, a low-power blockchain technology developed by MAP Emulsion, and is part of an eco-responsible approach. Unlike traditional blockchain technologies, it has a reduced environmental impact, aligning with Cosmed’s sustainability commitments.

“This significant innovation provides additional security for our exporting companies, their international partners, and local authorities,” said Jean-Marc Giroux, President of Cosmed. “By choosing Sorga, a French solution, we affirm our commitment to digital sovereignty while also meeting global market demands for traceability.”
