The global luxury goods market has experienced significant growth in recent years, driven by changes in consumer behavior, emerging market trends, and technological advancements. This growth imposes specific demands on supply chains and gives logistics a fundamental role.

This is highlighted by DHL, which has presented the report ‘Luxury Logistics: Revealing Success Opportunities in the Supply Chain’. In the report, the company points out the keys to optimizing the supply chains of these brands, a sector in full evolution.

“As the luxury market expands, logistics for luxury goods must transcend mere transportation and must combine the management of premium products with standard products seamlessly, guaranteeing perfect delivery in every case,” says Katja Busch, Chief Commercial Officer of DHL and Head of Customer Solutions & Innovation at the company.
FIVE KEY AREAS

Analyzing the logistics of personal luxury goods from the fields of fashion design, high-quality watches and jewelry, and premium cosmetics and fragrances, the DHL report explores the current trends and challenges shaping this market niche. It details their impact on logistics strategy and the structure and management of supply chains. Furthermore, it delves into the logistics requirements throughout the entire value chain of luxury sector companies, focusing on five key areas explained as follows:

1. Supply Chain Visibility: Advances in digital technologies, such as IoT, RFID, and serialization, enable Control Tower solutions to improve supply chain visibility and security. This leads to better customer experience, profitability, and sustainability.

2. Security: Luxury goods logistics faces significant security challenges, including physical threats, internal threats, or fraud in the e-commerce environment. This requires optimization of packaging, specific customer training, simplified claims processing, thorough investigations, and advanced technology, among other factors. All this aims to guarantee safe and reliable delivery.

3. Premium Delivery: As online retail commerce grows, luxury brands must invest in premium delivery services to replicate online the experience a customer has in one of their physical boutiques. This involves guaranteeing an improved customer experience in the online channel and reinforcing brand identity through details such as flexible delivery schedules, eco-friendly practices, customized packaging, and simplified returns.

4. Distribution Centers: Luxury brands must transform traditional distribution centers into omnichannel hubs to manage business growth, meet changing customer demands, and comply with regulatory changes. This involves integrating activities such as e-commerce, the circular economy, and sustainable practices.

5. Sustainability: Advocating for sustainable logistics, such as the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for air cargo transport to minimize the risk of damage to luxury items, is essential for brands to improve consumer perception. It also responds to the continuous and growing expectations regarding environmental responsibility from companies, citizens, and public administrations.

“The dynamics of supply chains are perpetually changing, especially for luxury products from European markets like Italy, France, and Switzerland. To navigate these changes, brands must understand their market profiles – whether mature or emerging – and adapt their strategies in those supply chains,” specifies Mirella Muller-Wuellenweber, President of the eRetail & Fashion Sector at DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation.
