The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has announced a significant update to its colored stone services. Beginning January 1, 2026, the institute will issue redesigned reports with a clearer data format and expanded origin-determination capabilities. This article outlines the key changes and their intended impact on the gem trade.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will roll out redesigned colored stone reports and expanded origin-determination services beginning January 1, 2026. The update was announced from Carlsbad, California, on December 10, 2025.
The new reports will present gemological data in a revised format intended to highlight key characteristics. According to GIA, the redesign aims to provide clearer information for both the trade and consumers.
From January 2026, GIA will extend its origin-determination services to opal, peridot and demantoid garnet. These additions build on existing geographic origin services for alexandrite, emerald, Paraíba tourmaline, red spinel, ruby and sapphire, as well as the more recent origin reporting for untreated jadeite jade and omphacite jade from Myanmar (Burma) and Guatemala.
Shane McClure, Global Director of Colored Stone Services, said the above.
GIA will also revise weight categories and related fees for colored stone submissions. The updated structure will be published on GIA.edu on January 1, 2026. All items submitted on or after that date will be assessed under the new fee schedule and issued with the redesigned reports.
