This necklace was gifted to Taylor by her husband Richard Burton over 50 years ago for her 40th birthday. Margot wearing it seems like a tribute to the glamour of old Hollywood and its famous love stories. Taylor and Burton met on the set of the film ‘Cleopatra’ in 1962 when both were married to other people. Their romance was widely discussed around the world.
The history of this diamond predates Hollywood. This heart-shaped diamond is inscribed in the Persian language with ‘Love is Eternal’ and also bears the name Nur Jahan. According to historians, this diamond was given by Mughal Emperor Jahangir to his wife Nur Jahan. Later, it came into the possession of their son Shah Jahan. It is believed that Shah Jahan gifted it to his wife Mumtaz Mahal, which is how it got the name ‘Taj Mahal Diamond’.
In 1971, the Cartier company purchased this diamond and gave it a new form with gold, rubies, and other diamonds. Previously, it was suspended from an Indian silk cord. A year later, designer Alfred Durante crafted it into a woven gold and ruby necklace featuring a slide, a round pendant, and tassels.
