As part of the world’s luxury leader, Bulgari is required to follow the sustainable development objectives set at the LVMH group level. We met with Eleonora Rizzuto, Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer and Director Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility, as part of our series on sustainability and the watchmaking industry.
Bulgari is one of the pillars of the “Jewelry and Watchmaking” division of LVMH, the world’s luxury leader. The group’s ESG approach is fundamental due to the number of brands it owns and thus its impact on the ground, but also due to the signals it sends to an entire industry.
In its 2021 sustainability report, LVMH announces – at the group level – total emissions of 4.8 MTeqCO2 (million tonnes of carbon equivalent). However, it does not break down the findings by brand. It is therefore worthwhile to take a closer look at the specific cases presented by these brands.
What is the impact of a globalized and leading brand like Bulgari in the field of jewelry and watchmaking? What specific ESG actions does it undertake, for what objectives and what deadlines? To find out more, we met with Eleonora Rizzuto, Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer and Director Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility at Bulgari.

Europa Star: LVMH publishes a sustainability report at the group level, but no details are specified by brand. Can you give us more details on the specific case of Bulgari?
«En innovant, nous atteindrons une traçabilité à 100%»
“The brand reports on its environmental impact and measures it every year; the results are communicated annually at the group level. To be completely transparent, we are finalizing the calculations of our carbon footprint for autumn 2022. We started working on this topic a long time ago. As early as 2012, renewable energies were prioritized at production sites. Today, 100% of production is powered this way at our sites in Valenza, Florence, as well as in Switzerland. Similarly, each of our 200 boutiques renovated since 2013 uses recycled materials. They are strictly controlled for their electricity consumption and are 100% equipped with LED bulbs.”
“Bulgari has established an action plan to measure its emissions and act accordingly at all key levels which are production, points of sale, and transport. Thus, at production sites, we have implemented certification systems (ISO14001, ISO 45001) which allow us to move towards a constant reduction of our carbon footprint and a continuous improvement of our environmental performance.”

Given the urgency of climate, environmental, and social upheavals, time is running out to act…
To combat global warming, the goal is to best contribute to the group’s objective of having a carbon trajectory compatible with the 2015 Paris Agreement, by reducing greenhouse gas emissions related to the energy consumption of sites and boutiques by 50% by 2026 (base 2019), thanks to the 100% renewable energy policy already applied by Bulgari.
