India’s election to chair the Kimberley Process in 2026 marks a significant milestone for its gem and jewellery sector. This leadership role underscores the country’s commitment to ethical sourcing and global standards in the diamond trade.
The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), India’s nodal agency for the Kimberley Process (KP), has welcomed India’s election as Chair of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) for 2026.
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is a UN-mandated initiative governing international trade in rough diamonds, aimed at preventing conflict diamonds from entering legitimate supply chains. It remains the only global mechanism regulating this segment of the diamond industry.
India, a founding participant of the Kimberley Process, will assume the Chair from January 1, 2026. The decision was approved by consensus through a written procedure initiated on December 5, 2025. India will also serve as Vice Chair for 2025, effective December 25, 2025.
The Kimberley Process comprises 60 participants representing 80 countries, with the European Union considered as one participant. India’s appointment as Vice Chair and Chair reflects international confidence in its leadership within the KP framework.
