Part 1: “Witness the Aurora with the World” – The 2024 GUILD x GEMFIELDS Aurora Borealis Competition Kicks Off!

On September 25th, the award ceremony for the third “Witness the Aurora with the World” GUILD x GEMFIELDS Aurora Borealis International Jewelry Design Competition, jointly organized by the GUILD Gem Laboratory, GIA (Gemological Institute of America), and the renowned mining company GEMFIELDS, was grandly held at the IBC Global Business Center in Shenzhen.

Gathering Strength for the Industry, Serving the Global Market
“From 2022 to 2024, the Aurora Borealis Competition has embarked on a brand-new journey for its third edition. More and more practitioners are joining, and outstanding works are continuously emerging, allowing the competition committee and expert judges from around the world to witness the vitality and resilience of the industry.”

This edition of the competition received over 1,300 entries globally, with 340 pieces shortlisted, a 100% increase year-on-year. Online votes exceeded 8.4 million, a 400% increase year-on-year. These numbers are both astonishing and gratifying.

Focusing on Development, the Potential of Gem Categories Awaits Release

“I am very proud that GEMFIELDS has sponsored the ‘Aurora Borealis’ International Jewelry Design Competition for two consecutive years, and I am thrilled to participate in such an event that encourages and inspires more people to appreciate and love colored gemstones.”

GEMFIELDS is a mining company that produces 50% of the world’s rubies and over 25% of the world’s emeralds. Every year, GEMFIELDS conducts market research in major global markets. In China, their research shows that rubies remain one of the most popular gemstones, and for global ruby practitioners, the market still holds immense opportunities.

Building Trust to Protect the Market, Growth Originates from Market Confidence
“The resilience of the Chinese market is evident. It is not only the world’s largest jewelry producer but also the world’s largest jewelry consumer market. More noteworthy is its enormous growth potential. Currently, colored gemstones account for only 4% of China’s jewelry market share, which means practitioners lack not market opportunities but the key to unlocking consumer demand.”

At this critical juncture, I believe the most important thing is to build consumer confidence in colored gemstones. This is the foundation for making choices and a necessary option for long-term development.

Integrating into the Global Supply Chain, Growing Amidst Challenges

“Sri Lanka’s Beruwala-based ChinaFort is not only one of the world’s oldest and busiest gem trading centers but also a place full of vitality and opportunity. In June this year, GIA officially established a gem laboratory in Beruwala. To this day, it has become GIA’s second home. This is a landmark event for the global industry’s development in 2024.”

2024 is a challenging year for the global colored gemstone market. Changes in the macroeconomic environment are affecting many practitioners. In supply chain hubs like Sri Lanka and Thailand, we can always foresee some changes through phenomena, such as the emergence of new technologies and new gemstones, forcing the market to adjust its strategies.

Innovation Drives Diversified Industrial Development
“The jewelry industry, as a crystallization of cultural and artistic exchange, carries the dual value of history and emotion. Through the platform of the Aurora Borealis Competition, we discover design works with unique perspectives and creativity.”

They embody the creativity and passion of designers from home and abroad, and their enthusiastic creations continuously propel the industry forward. No matter how the market environment changes, companies focused on innovation can always seize development opportunities.
