India assumes the Vice-Chair role of the Kimberley Process today, with the Chair position to follow in January 2025. This international initiative works to certify conflict-free diamonds, supporting ethical trade. India’s leadership underscores its growing role in global governance and responsible industry practices.
India will assume the role of Vice-Chair of the Kimberley Process from today and will become the Chair from January 1st of next year. The Kimberley Process is a tripartite initiative involving governments, the international diamond industry, and civil society, aimed at ensuring that diamond trade is conflict-free to promote a legitimate diamond industry.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India’s selection reflects global confidence in the government’s commitment to promoting integrity and transparency in international trade.
As Vice-Chair in 2025 and Chair in 2026, India will work with all participants and observers to ensure compliance with the rules, enhance its credibility in line with its core objectives and evolving global expectations, and steer the Kimberley Process towards becoming a more inclusive and effective multilateral framework.
This initiative currently has 60 participants representing over 99 percent of global rough diamond trade, making it the most comprehensive international mechanism governing this sector.
