This article reports on the G7’s reaffirmed solidarity with Ukraine and new sanctions targeting Russian diamonds.

[Tokyo/Washington/Brussels, Dec 6 (Reuters)] – Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations held an online meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Wednesday, reaffirming their solidarity. They also agreed on new sanctions banning Russian diamonds.
According to a joint statement released after the talks, the new measures will see the G7 ban direct imports of non-industrial diamonds from Russia starting January 1, 2024. Subsequently, by around March 1, imports of Russian diamonds sold by third countries will also be restricted in phases.

During the talks, Zelenskiy called for continued support for Ukraine. The presidential office stated on its website:

The G7 leaders also discussed the conflict between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas in the Palestinian territory of Gaza. They stated that “more effective action” is needed to curb the forced displacement of many civilians and expressed support for further pauses in fighting to expand humanitarian aid.
