This report details the first import of Russian eggs to the United States since 1992, based on information from Russian state media. The geopolitical and trade context of such a transaction is significant, and we will continue to monitor developments from official sources.

For the first time in 32 years, the United States has imported eggs from Russia. The last time the US imported eggs from Russia was in 1992. In July 2025, the US spent $455,000 on fresh chicken eggs from Russia.
This information was provided by the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. According to the report, in July 2025, the US purchased fresh eggs from Russia, marking the first such transaction since 1992.
The primary reasons behind this move are a shortage of eggs and soaring prices in the United States. At the beginning of 2025, an avian flu outbreak spread across the US, severely impacting the country’s chicken and egg stocks. Consequently, egg prices rose sharply.
Although there has been some relief in recent months, egg prices in July were 16.4 percent higher compared to the previous year. Therefore, the US government decided to import from new sources to stabilize the egg supply.
The scarcity of eggs and price surges due to avian flu have been a persistent issue throughout the year in the US. According to a CNN report in January 2025, several stores imposed limits on egg purchases, while by February, the price of a dozen eggs had reached up to $7. Experts stated that it could take 6-9 months for stability to return to the US food market.
It is worth noting that trade between Russia and the US has significantly declined. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the US has imposed several strict economic and trade sanctions on Russia. These include freezing billions of dollars from Russia’s central bank, excluding major Russian banks from the SWIFT system, banning investments in the energy sector, and imposing sanctions on numerous prominent Russians. Additionally, the US has also banned imports of items such as oil, gas, coal, seafood, and diamonds from Russia. However, a meeting between Trump and Putin took place in Alaska, where the two leaders discussed possibilities for economic cooperation.
