This report details a localized COVID-19 outbreak in Thailand, highlighting the ongoing global challenge of managing the pandemic in specific communities and workplaces.

On May 8 local time, the Chanthaburi Provincial Public Health Department in eastern Thailand disclosed that on May 5 and 6, a total of 52 African nationals working at a large gem wholesale market in the province were all confirmed to have COVID-19.

Currently, local epidemic prevention departments have initiated screening for all African nationals and are conducting quarantine for high-risk groups who had close contact with the confirmed patients.

Chanthaburi, Thailand, is one of Asia’s largest gem processing and wholesale markets. A large number of African gemstone traders conduct business in the province, frequently traveling between Africa, Thailand’s capital Bangkok, and Chanthaburi.
