Editor’s Note
This tragic incident in Delhi’s Vikaspuri area, where a bus helper lost his life in a fire reportedly ignited by an incense stick used to ward off mosquitoes, highlights a preventable danger. It serves as a stark reminder of the acute fire risks associated with common practices in confined spaces, underscoring the need for greater awareness and safety measures, especially for those in vulnerable living situations.

A 25-year-old bus helper died after a fire broke out in a private bus in Delhi’s Vikaspuri area. Police suspect the fire was caused by an incense stick. Police stated on Monday that the deceased, named Sunil, used to sleep inside the bus at night. During this time, he would light incense sticks to repel mosquitoes.
According to police, the investigation is ongoing, but preliminary findings point to the incense stick as the cause of the fire. Police believe the fire started from the incense stick and gradually engulfed the entire bus. The fire was so intense that Sunil did not get a chance to escape.
Sunil’s charred body was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where it has been kept for postmortem. Meanwhile, local residents said the fire in the bus was so severe that by the time firefighters arrived, the entire bus was already burnt. After strenuous efforts, the fire was brought under control and Sunil’s body was retrieved.
It is reported that the bus owner is Vijay Kumar (46), and the bus had a Haryana registration number. Currently, police are investigating whether the incense stick was indeed the actual cause of the fire or if it happened due to some technical fault.
