Two passengers in Peru face preliminary detention after failing to declare over half a kilogram of gold and silver jewelry worth nearly S/ 160,000, according to Sunat.
Following the inspection, the Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered the preliminary detention of the passengers for bringing in undeclared merchandise.
Two passengers arriving in Peru were intercepted for failing to declare more than half a kilogram of gold and silver jewelry valued at nearly S/ 160,000, reported the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat).
The intervention took place upon the passengers’ arrival, as they headed toward the exit of the international hall at Jorge Chávez International Airport, but were selected for control based on risk management.
After a routine baggage inspection, the passengers were subjected to a “BodyScan” review, an X-ray body scanning device with which the undeclared jewelry was found, hidden in bags concealed within the travelers’ clothing.
This inspection was carried out alongside the Fiscal Police and in coordination with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, whose representative ordered the preliminary detention of the passengers in light of evidence of a crime.
The Customs and Tax Administration states that it will continue to carry out these controls at the country’s airports to combat the transport of undeclared merchandise and enforce the declaration and payment of corresponding taxes.
