**Editor’s Note:** eBay is strengthening trust in second-hand fashion by expanding its authentication service in Germany to include clothing, shoes, and accessories from November. Building on its expertise with luxury watches, handbags, and sneakers, this move offers a complete, head-to-toe verification experience—boosting buyer confidence and advancing the credibility of the pre-loved market.
eBay is expanding its market-leading authentication service in Germany starting November, now covering clothing, shoes, and accessories in addition to jewelry. This move provides a comprehensive, head-to-toe secure shopping experience, reinforcing eBay’s commitment to building trust in pre-loved fashion and offering users greater confidence when buying second-hand designer items.
Already known for authenticating luxury watches, luxury handbags, and sneakers, eBay is now extending its expertise to the entire fashion segment – a significant milestone for circular fashion and the credibility of the pre-loved market.
When purchasing clothing, shoes, and accessories from over 30 different brands, buyers can optionally book eBay’s authentication service for €10 per item, applicable to articles with a selling price of €100 or more.
If an item passes inspection, it receives an authenticity tag with a QR code and is shipped directly to the buyer with trackable delivery. In the case of a return, each product is re-inspected by eBay authenticators, ensuring both buyers and sellers can always rely on maximum security.
The eBay authentication service covers clothing, accessories, and shoes from a wide range of selected brands, including both luxury labels and streetwear giants, such as: Adidas, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Balmain, Barbour, Belstaff, Bottega Veneta, Burberry, Burberry London, Canada Goose, Chanel, Christian Louboutin, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Givenchy, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo, Max Mara, Moncler, Nike, Off-White, Palace, Palm Angels, Polo Ralph Lauren, Prada, Saint Laurent, Stone Island, Supreme, The North Face, Tom Ford, Valentino, Versace, Wellensteyn.
All new and pre-owned jewelry items that meet the requirements for eBay authentication are carefully inspected after purchase by eBay authenticators trained by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) – the world’s leading authority on diamonds, gemstones, and pearls. With over 90 years of experience, GIA brings unparalleled expertise to provide maximum security for both buyers and sellers. The offering includes jewelry pieces made from various precious metals and featuring selected gemstones, with a selling price of €500 or more. The service is free of charge for both buyers and sellers.
The eBay authentication team uses state-of-the-art methods to analyze every detail – from metal type and purity to gemstone quality – and cross-checks the information against the item description. After successful authentication, the jewelry piece is securely packaged and shipped directly to the buyer via fast, secure delivery – with no additional costs for either party.
Each authenticated piece also receives an individual authenticity card with a QR code, allowing customers to access all information about their item’s authenticity. Security is also maintained during returns: before the item is sent back to the seller, it is re-inspected by the eBay authentication team, trained by GIA.
From mid-November, buyers can optionally book eBay authentication for luxury handbags with a selling price up to €199, and for luxury watches from selected brands with a selling price between €1,000 and €1,799. The service costs €10 per handbag or €99 per watch. This complements eBay’s free authentication service for luxury handbags priced at €200 or more and luxury watches priced at €1,800 or more, adding a flexible optional service and further strengthening trust in the luxury goods trade.
