Support for 400 Stores and 500 Merchants in Jinju Central Market, Full-Scale Win-Win Support Begins

Coupang and Coupang Eats Service (CES) are supplying approximately 110,000 eco-friendly packaging containers to the Jinju Central Market in Gyeongsangnam-do to revitalize the traditional market.

This support was prepared to enhance the online sales competitiveness of traditional market merchants, reduce their packaging cost burden, and provide practical assistance in their digital transition. Jinju Central Market, originating from the Jinju Commercial Office in 1884, stands as a representative commercial hub in the Jinju region.

Coupang and CES proactively provided the eco-friendly packaging containers needed in the initial preparation stage so that traditional market merchants could smoothly transition to online sales. This allows merchants to secure packaging containers that can be immediately used for delivery services and other purposes, equipping them with the necessary conditions to prepare for online sales.

Furthermore, they plan to promote the spread of eco-friendly culture within the market by providing certification stickers to stores that practice eco-friendly packaging.

This support is a follow-up measure to the ‘Traditional Market Win-Win Agreement’ signed with the National Federation of Merchants last year. The two companies have been preparing an online sales capacity enhancement program for Jinju Central Market merchants since January this year and plan to conduct training for merchants in stages.

In addition, the program is expected to include online sales strategy consulting, such as store onboarding preparation training and support for professional photography of menus/products.

Previously, the two companies attended a Gyeongsangnam-do Federation of Merchants workshop in December last year, sharing the progress and future plans of the traditional market win-win project, directly listening to various opinions from merchants regarding their online entry and digital transition, and have been continuously strengthening regional-level cooperation.

“The eco-friendly packaging containers received through this support can be used immediately in our actual store, which has been a great help,” said the store ‘Daeho Gimbap,’ which sells Korean meals and light meals at Jinju Central Market in Gyeongsangnam-do. “Through Coupang’s support, we have become interested in online sales and expect a positive effect on future sales expansion.”
“For traditional markets to continue growing even in the digital age, securing online competitiveness is essential,” said Kim Myeong-gyu, CEO of Coupang Eats Service. “We will continue to expand win-win programs that provide practical help to merchants and contribute to revitalizing the local economy.”
