Whether official or not, Dua Lipa’s ring – an 18-carat yellow gold band adorned with a two-carat diamond, valued at nearly €36,000 – is decidedly in tune with the times.

“I think replacing delicate claw settings with maxi engagement ring models shows a certain evolution. People are looking for more contemporary and easy-to-wear rings,” London-based jeweler Kitty Fuller, whose massive rings are the signature of her brand Kitty Joyas, explains to Vogue.

“I love their bold and sculptural aesthetic,” London-based jeweler and goldsmith Jessie Thomas says about the rise of maxi engagement rings. “They feel unique and constitute a piece of finery that is easy to wear while remaining timeless.”

While the trend of maxi engagement rings seems today to constitute a hyper-trendy alternative choice, this style actually dates back to the Victorian era.

“The gemstone is bezel-set – as opposed to the claw setting, very fashionable at the time – to create a flush surface,” continues Jessie Thomas, who notes that this way of setting a larger stone is less flashy and better suited for daily wear. “This design was, and remains, extremely desirable for its practical and durable side, as the flush setting protects the gemstone from wear.”

Today, people who wear this type of ring choose to modernize it.

“Dua Lipa’s ring features a half-set diamond with open sides, very cool and modern,” notes Jessie Thomas.

For her part, Kitty Fuller – the happy owner of the maxi engagement ring she designed but not initially for herself – has observed that a growing number of clients are also opting for colored gemstones:

“Diamonds remain by far the most popular stone choice, but I have seen a real increase in the number of people open to adding colored gemstones near their diamonds, in order to reflect their personality or to recycle stones they have inherited.”

“I always work with the client’s hand to ensure that the model is suited to her hand and the size of her finger,” advises Kitty Fuller. “Once you have found the right size, I think it is important to opt for a model that resembles you and that doesn’t just follow a trend.”

As with most beautiful things, simplicity is generally key.

“Focus on the stone and comfort above all,” concludes the jeweler, “because it is an eternal piece of jewelry that you will want to wear your entire life.”
