This report details the emerging legal and familial dispute over the succession of Sona Comstar, a major automotive components firm, following the death of its promoter Sanjay Kapur. The contest highlights the complex interplay of corporate legacy and personal inheritance.

A significant property dispute has erupted following the death of businessman Sanjay Kapur, centering on the succession of Sona Comstar (Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd.), a company valued at over ₹30,000 crore. According to reports, his mother, Rani Kapur, and his third wife, Priya Sachdev, are now pitted against each other over the share and division of his assets.

Sanjay Kapur, the late son of founder Surinder Kapur, had expanded the family’s auto parts manufacturing business, Sona Comstar, establishing himself as a prominent businessman. His net worth was estimated between $1.2 to $1.5 billion (approx. ₹12,000 crore), with total assets reportedly between ₹10,300 crore and ₹13,000 crore. The market value of Sona Comstar alone is around ₹31,000 crore.
In a letter to Sona Comstar, Rani Kapur alleged that after her son’s death, while she was in a vulnerable state, she was forced to sign documents without explanation and was denied access to accounts and important documents.

She further accused unnamed individuals of trying to make appointments to the company’s board by claiming to represent the Kapur family without her knowledge or consent. She warned the company that proceeding without consulting her would be seen as a deliberate decision to harm the family and the company. This letter has also been sent to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

Sanjay Kapur passed away on June 12, 2025, in England at the age of 53 due to a heart attack. Reports suggest he fell ill during a polo match, with some claiming a bee sting to his throat may have triggered a cardiac arrest.
