A remarkable 1,098-carat diamond, described as being the size of a clementine, has been unearthed in Botswana. As reported by RFI, it ranks as the third-largest diamond ever discovered.

According to RFI, a 1,098-carat diamond has been discovered in Botswana. This is the third largest diamond known in world history.
The diamond, discovered by a private company owned by a South African diamond group and the Botswanan state, is the third largest known in world history, reports RFI.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who was able to hold this rough diamond in his hands this week, announced that the profits from the sale of the stone will be invested “in national development needs.”
The price of this precious stone has not yet been assessed. However, for comparison, our colleagues note that a diamond of 100 more carats discovered in the same country had been estimated at $53 million.
This rough stone could either be kept whole or divided into dozens of diamonds. The diamond ball will be sold at auction, and with a team of specialists, the owner will decide what will be done with it.
