MMTC-PAMP’s Major Plan on Rising Silver Demand

Precious metals refining company MMTC-PAMP has planned to start silver recycling on a pilot basis at its existing stores within the next 3 months. A top executive of the company said that due to rising demand, there is an increasing risk of serious supply-side bottlenecks.

Why the Preparation for Recycling?
None

MMTC-PAMP’s MD and CEO, Samit Guha, said the company is entering silver recycling because its economics are now more favorable, while despite rising demand, there are no signs of significant expansion in global mine production capacity.

“If the demand for silver continues like this, we could face serious supply-side constraints. Therefore, recycled silver will have to play a major role in bridging this gap.”

He called on the government to encourage silver recycling, stating that Indian households hold an estimated 25,000 tonnes of gold and ten times that amount in silver.

How Many Stores Does MMTC-PAMP Operate?

MMTC-PAMP operates 20 stores for gold recycling, which can also be prepared to handle silver. The company is planning to double the number of its stores in the next five years.

Where Will It Start?
None
“We need to upgrade some of our equipment at the stores and reorganize them to handle silver as a metal. We need to provide some training. We will start a pilot project in some of our stores and then expand it.”

He said this pilot project will be started in Delhi within three to four months.
