【Gilena, Spai】The Story of Rocío and Azul Añil: From Creating Jewelry as a Child in Gilena to Distributing Her Craft Across Spain

Editor’s Note

**Editor’s Note:** This piece highlights Azul Añil, a handmade jewelry brand from Gilena that has expanded across Spain through its innovative use of recycled materials, a strong online presence, and a deep pride in Andalusian heritage.

Azul Añil, a handmade jewelry brand born in Gilena, reaches all of Spain thanks to a pioneering commitment to recycled materials, online sales, and pride in Andalusia.

“I’ve been making jewelry for as long as I can remember,” explains Rocío, looking back. Before Azul Añil existed, even before imagining she would one day make a living from it, she spent hours creating. While other children played, she preferred to entertain herself by transforming any object she found. A broken necklace, a small forgotten piece, or any material that came into her hands was enough to create earrings, a necklace, or a gift for someone close. That way of playing would ultimately set the course of her entire life.
From Art to Craft

Her vocation was always linked to the artistic world. She studied Art History and then continued her education in Fine Arts, specializing in the restoration of painting, sculpture, and graphic documents. For almost ten years, she worked as an art restorer, a profession very different from jewelry making, but one that also requires patience, precision, and sensitivity.
However, she never stopped designing. Although work occupied most of her time, she always carried a notebook where she jotted down ideas, drawings, or inspirations that appeared spontaneously. These were small sketches she saved for the future, never imagining they would one day become complete collections.
That future began to take shape when the economic crisis hit the restoration sector hard. Rocío lost her job and started making jewelry from home simply as a hobby. The first pieces were for herself and her friends. Then orders started coming from friends of friends, and she understood that what she had been doing all her life also sparked the interest of others. That was when she decided to turn a hobby into a professional project.

The Birth of Azul Añil

Before launching the brand, she dedicated more than a year to building it. She wanted it to have its own identity and to reflect exactly the values she identified with. She hadn’t yet chosen the name Azul Añil, but she was clear that she wanted to create a completely handmade product, consistent with her way of understanding design and creation. During that time, she undertook various training courses and worked on the brand concept until, finally, Azul Añil was officially born in September 2017.
From the beginning, she was also clear about another fundamental aspect: she wanted to work with recycled materials. Instead of using only the usual jewelry materials, she decided to give a second life to paper, cardboard, and certain reused plastics, combining them with sterling silver, gold, gold leaf, and silver leaf. This mix of recycled materials and precious metals ultimately became the essence of her collections.

When Many Thought It Was Crazy

Today, talking about creative recycling or upcycling is common, but when Rocío began developing her project, that reality was very different. She herself remembers that many people didn’t understand her idea of making jewelry from recycled materials and selling them online.

“There were people who looked at me as if to say: this girl has gone crazy,” she recalls, explaining the reaction of those who knew her project. After having worked for years as a restorer, announcing that she was going to dedicate herself to creating jewelry from materials that many considered ‘trash’ seemed like too risky a bet.

But if there was one thing she was clear about, it was how to start. From the very first moment, she bet on online sales, through a website and social media. In 2016, that decision still raised doubts, but she was convinced it was the right path.
Growth didn’t happen overnight. Rocío sums up those early years with a very simple expression: “pick and shovel.” Constant posts, attention to the growing community on social media, and many hours of work to make a newly born brand known.
That effort has paid off, and currently, Azul Añil has nearly 20,000 followers on Instagram, a community that has accompanied the firm’s growth and has helped its creations reach customers all over Spain. This social network became its main showcase, and little by little, the first collaborations with specialized craft stores also began to arrive.

The Collection That Carries Andalusia as Its Banner

Although Azul Añil has developed collections inspired by the Perseids, Japan, or the Japanese kintsugi technique, there is one that holds a special place. Sur was the brand’s first collection and continues to be its greatest hallmark. Each of its pieces is named after an Andalusian town, and its designs are inspired by the tiles of the Alhambra, flowers, polka dots, the light, and the colors of Andalusia. Many pieces incorporate gold leaf details to reflect that luminosity that Rocío associates with her homeland.

“I carry Andalusia with pride wherever I go.”

Meanwhile, she continues to research new materials. Although recycled paper remains the basis of most of her collections, she is now working with biomaterials.
