【Seoul, South】2 Jewelry Labels to Watch Now

Editor’s Note

**Editor’s Note:** From literary inspiration to bold design, these two jewelry labels are shaping the future of fashion.

Fashion begins with jewelry. And it ends with jewelry. Vogue has selected two jewelry labels to keep an eye on.

GOLDEN POEM

What kind of jewelry does a designer with a literature background create? The answer can be found in ‘Alighieri’ by designer Rosh Mahtani, who stopped by Seoul last summer for a trunk show. A graduate in French and Italian literature from the University of Oxford, she felt a bit lost after graduation. New inspiration struck after reading Dante’s Divine Comedy.

“I conceived the brand based on Dante Alighieri, who wrote the Divine Comedy. Each piece of jewelry is connected to one of the 100 poems in the work, expressing the imagery from those poems.”

The signature design is a necklace engraved with a lion, which appears in the first canto of the Divine Comedy. With a large following already in Korea, what does she think of Korean women’s style?

“Simple yet elegant style is superb! That’s probably why my jewelry suits them so well.”

PORTRAIT CLASS

Stylist Kim Se-jun defines the identity of his brand ‘Portrait Report’ as ‘Wo,Man’.

“I wanted to design for those with a new DNA that doesn’t distinguish between male and female—people with an unconventional style. Those who have the sense to style a cuff as a ring.”

Launched with the idea of writing a ‘report’ on his favorite icons like Andy Warhol and Sade, this brand is popular among Seoul’s fashion-forward crowd (a necklace made by linking earrings has already sold out). Perhaps thanks to his experience as a VMD at a sophisticated national brand, his approach to brand promotion is uniquely stylish. He also separates his Instagram account, which serves as a ‘mood board,’ from an account featuring celebrity-worn photos—a distinctive concept. Jewelry is just the beginning; a fashion line is set to launch next year.

“I want to call those who style our designs in a unique way ‘Best Portraits.'”
