Michal Negrin, the renowned Israeli jewelry designer known for her floral and whimsical designs, has announced the closure of her business after more than 30 years. The news was delivered to employees just before Rosh Hashanah.
Company spokesperson Rani Rahab stated that the stores must close due to financial difficulties. This places Negrin among other players in the industry currently facing a crisis. Experts predict that approximately one-third of Israel’s fashion and jewelry sector will collapse in the coming years.
Negrin employed around 120 people at a factory in Bat Yam, south of Tel Aviv, and in 13 boutiques across Israel, including one at Ben-Gurion Airport. An additional 22 jewelry stores bearing her logo operate worldwide. While the factory has already ceased production, the remaining stores will continue operating to sell off existing jewelry and clothing collections. Approximately 120 employees are being laid off.
The designer, who started with a small stall at the Nachalat Binjamin artists’ market in Tel Aviv in 1988, remained faithful to her opulent romantic style until the end. Some critics suggest she failed to keep up with changing times, and her designs became outdated. Addressing the broader difficulties in the fashion industry, Negrin remarked:
