A cattle herder from Tanzania has received nearly three million euros for two tanzanite stones he unearthed. They are the largest ever found in the country. Who is this man?
Saniniu Kuryan Laizer, a 52-year-old businessman from northern Tanzania, was already wealthy before this find. He owns 2,000 cattle, has four wives and 30 children. He also holds a license to mine for gemstones on a small claim in the Merelani Hills. Now, the Maasai man is stone-rich. Last week, he discovered two precious tanzanite chunks weighing 9.2 and 5.8 kilograms, the largest stones of this type ever found. The previous record-holder weighed only 3.3 kilograms.
