It is well known that jewelry is never “just” or “simple” jewelry: jewelry has value, meaning, and serves as a medium for messages and emotions. Without exaggeration, it is almost an extension of our soul in representing and completing us. When it comes to Voodoo Jewels, this concept is further amplified: with their “raw” shapes, squared stones, and bright colors, they are further charged with ideals and feelings. Like the love that Livia Lazzari infuses into every creation, which, as you know well if you already own one of her rings, is always perceived through every detail.
We at Voodoo have known her for a long time, but what we still didn’t know up close was Livia’s spontaneity, her desire to experiment, to let herself be carried away by the world’s inputs to create new collections, and above all, the great desire to reach every woman with her jewelry. A process of growth.
Voodoo Jewels’ jewelry consists of unique shapes, bright colors, exotic and natural inspirations… What were the key steps and moments of awareness that characterized this journey?
It is always very difficult for me to explain how the creative process happens, because everything develops spontaneously and naturally. Every day I try to store inputs that I let settle in my mind, waiting for my creative spirit to rework them over time. Over the years, I have tried to create a style that is both raw and bold in forms, if you will, even aggressive, but still retains a certain sweetness, elegance, and femininity. The balance between lines and colors fully reflects the woman I am speaking to. Strong and resolute but always in touch with her feelings.
When was the Voodoo Jewels project born, and what was the goal?
The goal was to create a piece of jewelry that was precious for its craftsmanship and design value, not for the economic value of the materials. So I started experimenting with bronze and synthetic stones, also to offer a product that was accessible to everyone. Over time and with extensive supplier research, I realized that my jewelry could evolve even towards fine jewelry, thus working with precious stones, but always remaining within an “affordable” price range. I want my jewelry to live on my women and not remain as standalone objects.
Your latest collection, Zuleika, addresses the “rare, unique, and imperfect” beauty of every woman: how did the creative process develop in this case?
Zuleika, the first Fine collection, represents a very important moment for Voodoo Jewels because when I started thinking about it, I realized that the brand was changing. I understood that I would no longer talk about a world outside of us, like nature, but that I would begin to narrate the inner world of each of us.
I realized that the goal of my jewelry, so raw and imperfect, was to explain that the disharmonious set of our flaws makes us harmoniously unique and beautiful. The obsessive search for perfection frustrates and makes us unhappy; instead, we must learn to love ourselves, just as we are, imperfect and fascinating, like natural precious stones. From this awareness, Zuleika was born.
What is your favorite creation? And what meaning does it have for you?
My connection with a creation changes based on my mood and the phase of life I am going through. I can’t say which is my favorite, but in general, I am pleased when I manage to create an object that is simple yet impactful; I think that’s where a designer’s talent lies. It may seem strange seeing my jewelry, but I believe in the philosophy of “Less is More.”
The search for stones and inspirations must have taken you around the world. Is there a cultural aspect, a memory that is particularly dear to you?
There is a very fascinating aspect of India, almost magical. When you arrive, everything seems impossible, difficult, unattainable, and unsolvable, while in the end, in India, everything is truly possible. It’s something that only those who have visited can understand, but it’s true, and anyone who has been there can say the same thing. Everything eventually, incredibly and unexpectedly, resolves itself.
What are the 3 iconic jewelry pieces that represent Voodoo Jewels?
Again, it’s hard to say because it depends on the perception one has of the brand. I believe Voodoo Jewels has many different souls that coexist together; you have to see which aspect touched the soul of the woman wearing it, which click was triggered.
These are jewelry pieces that somehow speak to that rebellious part that, more or less veiled, we all find in ourselves, and rebellion is often synonymous with freedom. What does this concept represent for you?
Well, I’d say it represents everything.
