After crossing vast plains of lush green, framed by strips of red poppies, one arrives in Valenza: a Piedmontese town, not far from the border with Lombardy, considered the international capital of jewelry. It was here, in the province of Alessandria, that Carlo Re created the first men’s ring in 1967: the first piece in the history of the famous Recarlo brand. Today, fifty-five years after the creation of the first jewel, the Recarlo company exudes the seriousness, meticulous control, and painstaking attention that have brought this label success, but above all, the importance of craftsmanship and human intervention in the brand’s creations. Yes, because although Recarlo is a universe where innovation linked to sustainability, gender equality, and technological intervention is fundamental, the manual ability to create, select, control, and work raw materials by hand remains, without a doubt, an indispensable aspect.
From the outside of the Recarlo Maison, renovated in 2010, the importance of sustainability is already perceptible: the presence of solar panels, electric car charging stations, and, as made very clear, the ban on plastic items. These are key elements that define and dictate the company’s rules. The circular complex of the high jewelry residence is silent, bright, well-ordered, and overlooks a green core dominated by a wonderful olive tree. The offices and laboratories are spread over two floors, and it is Giorgio Re, one of the two CEOs of the company together with his brother Paolo Re, who shows all the offices on the upper and lower floors. Moving from one room to another, you see all the production players working carefully: from the jewelry designer to the person who creates the technical sheets for the precious stones, then moving to the first part of production, a sacred area characterized by various departments. In this area, very attentive men and women are busy with engraving, sealing precious stones, selecting diamonds and colored stones, and finally, quality control and labeling: a working universe made up of steps that require time, passion, and concentration.
You walk through corridors, go down flights of stairs, open and close doors, arriving at the ground floor. Here you move to the final construction area of the jewel: a series of laboratories of expert goldsmiths work on the prototyping phase, where 3D prints and computer drawings bring the creation process of Recarlo’s masterpieces to life, then moving to the setting laboratory and the rhodium plating and cleaning laboratory for the jewels. As explained throughout the tour of the company, technology at Recarlo is used to guarantee quality, but the artisanal part is indispensable. Another aspect that defines the Recarlo brand and unites all high jewelry creations with an imaginary thread is love. The precious pieces, signed by the Italian label, represent the value of the couple: the jewel is imagined as a rare, desired, unique object.
