Editor’s Note
Peruvian jewelry and goldsmithing exports fell 21.7% year-on-year from January to November 2022, totaling US$83.3 million, according to ADEX. The decline is attributed to reduced demand from the U.S., the primary market.
ADEX reports that shipments of Peruvian jewelry and goldsmithing totaled US$83 million 335 thousand between January and November 2022, registering a drop of -21.7% compared to the same period in 2021, when it achieved more than US$106 million 462 thousand, reported the Manufacturing Management of the Association of Exporters (ADEX).
The president of the guild’s Jewelry and Goldsmithing Committee, Rocío Mantilla, explained that this decline is due to lower demand from the U.S., the main destination for the sector, especially due to the recession that country is experiencing.
Therefore, in order to achieve a more competitive jewelry sector—she continued—a continuous supply of raw materials, market-aligned prices, and the development of technology to work with precious stones are required, as well as reducing informality, standardizing the quality of jewelry companies, and other aspects.

In this context, she highlighted the creation of the first precious stone lapidary workshop in Peru, which will be launched this year and will allow the training of specialists in gem polishing, responding to the sector’s need to access precious stones that have undergone a standardized process.
On the other hand, Mantilla highlighted the importance of continuing to position Peruvian jewelry and training the thousands of producers, artisans, and other professionals and technicians dedicated to this sector. In this regard, she announced that ADEX Continuing Education will begin the first Diploma in Jewelry and Goldsmithing for Export next April.

Finally, she indicated that her Committee is working to organize commercial missions in the country and abroad, with the aim of promoting the benefits of Peruvian jewelry and continuing to position it.
Shipments in this sector reached 43 countries, with the U.S. (US$72 million 614 thousand) being the main one, accounting for 87.1% of the total, with its demand decreasing by -21.6%. It was followed by Chile with US$2 million 597 thousand, which also had a negative variation of -64.3% and concentrated 3.1% of the total.
The top ten was completed by Canada (increase of 7.4%), Colombia (31.3%), Mexico (49.3%), Spain (98.4%), Argentina (132.5%), Ecuador (-20%), France (208%), and Austria (284.3%).
