【Macau, China】Macau’s Gold and Jewelry Industry Reaches 15.8 Billion Patacas in Imports and Exports Last Year

Editor’s Note

**Editor’s Note:** Macau’s diamond, gemstone, and gold sectors are proving to be high-value drivers, with total trade reaching 15.8 billion patacas in 2022. This industry spans trading, design, processing, auctions, and exhibitions, underscoring its growing economic significance.

Industry Overview

Macau’s Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lei Wai Nong, recently stated in a Legislative Assembly response to inquiries that the diamond, gemstone, and gold sectors have high added value. In 2022, the total import and export value of related materials and products reached 15.8 billion patacas, with the industry chain encompassing trading, design, processing, auctions, exhibitions, and many other sectors.

Regulatory Development

Since the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme became applicable to Macau in October 2019, rough diamonds can be legally imported and traded in Macau, providing raw material supply for the development of the midstream diamond and gemstone processing industry. With the establishment of the gemstone processing industry, Macau now has the conditions for coordinated development with sectors such as jewelry design and exhibitions, bringing new opportunities for the downstream retail industry.

Future Plans

According to reports, the Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute is currently promoting an international jewelry exhibition scheduled for September in Macau through its convention bidding and support “one-stop” service. Additionally, the Institute will provide multi-faceted support for enterprises in different fields such as gold and jewelry to participate in various convention and exhibition economic activities, thereby expanding business networks and exploring opportunities.

In the future, the Macau SAR government will optimize various support efforts for related industries, driving the construction of the jewelry industry chain and contributing to the moderate diversification of the economy.
