The Jalisco Chamber of Jewelry has launched UNICAM, a new quality inspection unit aimed at certifying jewelry lots to ensure compliance with NOM-033 standards for precious metals across Mexico.
The Jalisco Chamber of Jewelry presented this morning the Mexican Jewelry Quality Inspection Unit (UNICAM), an entity that will allow them to offer certified jewelry lots, guaranteeing that articles with precious metals comply with NOM-033.
Álvaro Azpeitia, president of the Jalisco Chamber of Jewelry, explained that this body will allow the inspection of all manufacturing and commercialization lots in the country, regardless of their origin.
UNICAM will offer inspection services for gold and silver jewelry, as well as products with precious metal coatings such as plated and bimetal items, both domestically and internationally.
It is estimated that the inspection unit will handle between eight and 13 services per inspector per month, depending on the geographic location where the service is requested.
Additionally, the creation of this unit aims to impact compliance with standards applicable to the sector and other industries.
According to jewelers, one of the main strategies to continue driving competitiveness in the Mexican jewelry industry internationally has been adherence to global standards. Through NOM-033, Mexican jewelry has become a benchmark for quality.
The jewelry industry generates more than 20,000 jobs in Jalisco and 70,000 nationwide, with a workforce that is 70 percent women.
