A product recall is underway on the popular Chinese e-commerce platform, Temu. The cause? Lead, nickel, and cadmium content exceeding regulations for certain jewelry items.
The affected items are earrings made of “zinc alloy with three layers of rhinestones” and a “gold or silver alloy necklace with a fringe and bohemian rhinestone pendant,” jewelry touted for its “retro and elegant style.” But behind this appealing appearance lies a “chemical risk,” as indicated by the dangerous product alert site, Rappel conso.
These jewelry items from the brand June Jewelry, sold on Temu, contain concentrations of nickel and lead exceeding the permitted limits. As for the necklace, the amount of cadmium detected also exceeds the regulatory standard.
It is important to recall that these three elements, although commonly used in industry for their specific properties, can pose health risks. Indeed, as highlighted by Santé publique France, nickel is classified as “carcinogenic to humans” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), while lead, often used in jewelry for its weight, is subject to strict concentration limits.
Faced with this situation, the recommendation is clear:
