**Editor’s Note:** This piece explores the evolving traditions of the Kawad Yatra, highlighting how modern commercial trends—such as specialized dress packages—are reshaping the pilgrimage’s attire, even as its core spirit of devotion and sacrifice endures.
The Kawad Yatra, a symbol of unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva, attracts millions of devotees every year. It is not just a religious pilgrimage but also a unique confluence of sacrifice, penance, and devotion.
With changing times, the attire of the Kanwariyas (devotees) has also undergone significant changes. Markets now offer a variety of shirts along with jewelry. A special dress package is available for the Kanwariyas’ getup. In recent years, the trend of dress packages has grown rapidly during this pilgrimage.
Shanu, owner of a dress package shop for Kanwariyas in Nishatganj, says that the trend of dress packages has increased significantly in recent years. The reason is social media. Devotees are sharing photos and videos of the Kawad Yatra extensively on social media. As a result, young people are leaning towards whatever is trending on social media. Now, the dress package has become a kind of trend. The starting price of a dress package is one thousand rupees, but if different ornaments and garments are purchased separately, the price can go up to 1,500 rupees.
