How Much Would You Get Paid for Your Gold Jewelry? Study Reveals Big Differences Between Cities and Stores
The Spanish Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has revealed, through an undercover study, that for your gold jewelry you could receive between 41% and 108% of its wholesale market value, with an average of 76%, depending on the store where you sell it.
To conduct the test, the OCU visited 103 establishments in various Spanish cities – including gold buyers, jewelry stores, second-hand shops, and a couple of websites – always presenting the same lot: three pieces valued at 324 euros according to the June quotation (two 18-karat rings, a pair of earrings of the same quality, and a 9-karat baby bracelet).

Results by City

Málaga was the city with the most generous appraisals (84% average), followed by Seville (81%). Barcelona and Bilbao offered an average of 78%. Valencia reached 76%, while Toledo stood at 74%.
The cities with the lowest offers were Oviedo and Valladolid, at 69%, and Madrid, at 71%.
The difference was notable: for a lot valued at 324 euros, offers ranged between 120 euros and 366 euros, even exceeding the real gold value in exceptional cases.

Questionable Practices Detected

The OCU also identified two bad practices in approximately 80% of the stores:
– Not clearly showing the price per gram, or showing it but not respecting it when calculating the final offer.
– Recording a weight lower than the actual weight – an average of 2.7% less – during the appraisal.

Recommendations Before Selling

– Use the OCU calculator to estimate the value of your jewelry based on its weight and karat (not all stores accept 9k pieces).
– Visit at least two establishments, demanding that they give you the price per gram and weigh your pieces in your presence; avoid methods that could damage them, such as acid.
– Negotiate, mentioning other offers so they review their appraisal upward.

– If the jewelry has sentimental value, consider pawning it at a Monte de Piedad (a charitable pawnshop): you will receive around 50% of the value, but you can recover it later with an annual interest rate between 6.5% and 14%.
