**Editor’s Note:** This piece explores how Cindy Chao transforms jewelry into micro-sculpture, using light, shadow, and organic forms to capture time and emotion.
Jewelry artist Cindy Chao has always centered her creations around the themes of “time” and “life.” Using jewelry as her medium, she captures fleeting moments of light and shadow and the flow of emotion, imbuing hard metals and gemstones with organic vitality. After two decades of creative refinement, her works are renowned for their elegant, flowing lines and richly layered structures, presenting an ultimate realm of “complexity reduced to simplicity” through the transformation of form, color, and light.
CINDY CHAO’s Black Label Masterpieces series is renowned for its极致 craftsmanship and artistry. Each piece requires over 24 months of creation and production, representing the artist’s pursuit of perfection. This exhibition debuts two new 2025 Masterpiece series works, reflecting her deep contemplation on the resilience of life and the malleability of materials.
“Rooted Brooch”
A leaf that has fallen from its branch sprouts fresh green shoots at its edge. Through multi-layered three-dimensional structures and the layered arrangement of gemstones, Cindy Chao condenses the life cycle of a leaf—from falling, taking root, and sprouting to flourishing—into a single brooch. The leaf lines alternately stretch and contract, with openwork designs creating a balanced sense of breath and strength between fullness and emptiness.
“Weave Brooch”
The 2025 Masterpiece “Weave Brooch” reinterprets one of humanity’s oldest crafts—weaving—through the sculptural vocabulary of French haute couture. After three years of conception and creation, the artist used titanium, gold, and over 6,700 gemstones to create an artistic masterpiece as supple as custom tweed, transforming the hardest materials into the softest lines.
Alongside the two Masterpiece series works, the exhibition also presents new “Four Seasons Series” branch and maple leaf pieces. The artist reconstructs natural forms with simpler strokes, using delicate lines, curves, and the luster of gemstones to make viewers feel as if they can sense natural light flowing between the metals. Each piece reveals the “texture of time”—soft yet resilient, flowing yet eternal.
To respond to the theme of “Sculpting Time,” Cindy Chao invited artist Yu Wen-Fu to create three specially commissioned bamboo installations: “Sunlight,” “Colored Light,” and “Dim Light,” collectively shaping the exhibition’s atmosphere. Using nearly 100,000 bamboo sticks shaped by hand, Yu created a spatial rhythm of flowing light and shadow, symbolizing the passage of time and the rhythm of life.
Cindy Chao has always adhered to a creative attitude of “disregarding time costs.” She believes each work is a journey of self-transcendence that must be refined in time until it reaches perfection. “I would rather let the work be slow than let it stop at a place where it could still be better,” she says. “Because the value of art lies in the flow and sedimentation of time itself.”
“Sculpting Time” is not just a jewelry exhibition; it is a dialogue of artistic spirit. Through micro-sculptural vocabulary, Cindy Chao mirrors the macro space constructed by Yu Wen-Fu with bamboo, showcasing a rare poetic tension in contemporary art—between movement and stillness, light and shadow, time is sculpted into an eternal form.
