**Editor’s Note:** This article highlights a critical consumer safety issue: the hidden health risks in costume jewelry. With nearly a third of tested items failing EU chemical standards, we urge readers to exercise caution and prioritize verified, compliant products.
Costume jewelry, often purchased for its affordability and style, may pose significant health risks due to the presence of toxic heavy metals. A recent test revealed that a substantial proportion of these items fail to meet European safety standards.
In a 2023 test, 8 out of 40 costume jewelry samples purchased from various online marketplaces—including Amazon, AliExpress, Bol, and Wish—were found to be non-compliant with European REACH regulations (the EU’s specific chemical safety regulation). The violations were severe for some items.
Lead is neurotoxic, and cadmium is a known carcinogen. Both metals accumulate in the body over a lifetime and are also present in the environment and food, making it crucial to minimize exposure. Nickel, another heavy metal, can cause contact allergies; approximately 10% of the population suffers from nickel allergy, leading to red, itchy skin rashes upon direct contact.
Despite existing European regulations, there is clearly a lack of consideration from manufacturers and suppliers. Many costume jewelry items are produced or distributed by small businesses that are often unaware of the issue. They rarely question the composition of their products or rely solely on information provided by suppliers. The majority of costume jewelry is imported from Asia, and a large portion does not meet European standards.
Following these alarming test results, we contacted the companies involved—Amazon, Bol, Wish, AliExpress, as well as the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Consumer Directorate within the European Commission—and requested the removal of these harmful products from the market.
In response, a federal action plan was presented at the end of 2025 by the Minister of Mobility, Climate, and Environmental Transition. This plan aims to make controls more targeted, faster, and more dissuasive. Key measures include:
– Increased sanctions
– The ability to block web pages offering dangerous products
– Greater transparency so citizens know which products are non-compliant and can seek refunds
– Enhanced cooperation with customs
– Data analysis to identify infringement trends
Some platforms, such as Wish, Cdiscount, Alibaba, Amazon, and eBay, have confirmed the removal of the incriminated jewelry from sale.
The health risks associated with these banned substances are significant. Lead and cadmium are highly toxic, entering the body primarily through ingestion and accumulating over time. Children may ingest metal particles by chewing on jewelry. Long-term exposure can lead to kidney problems, lung disorders, and, for lead, a negative impact on IQ. Young children are particularly vulnerable because their brains are still developing. Nickel can cause allergies and contact dermatitis.
To identify potentially dangerous jewelry:
– **Lead**: Jewelry with high lead content tends to be coarse and heavy.
– **Nickel**: Direct skin contact with nickel-containing jewelry can cause red, itchy rashes.
– **Tip**: Place a magnet near your jewelry. If it is attracted, the item is likely steel and may contain heavy metals.
