With diploma in hand, Frédéric Manin threw himself headlong into the world of jewelry. First by importing cultured pearls, then as a consultant for Platinum Guild International. His entrepreneurial spirit then led him to join one of the oldest Parisian jewelry manufacturing workshops, a subcontractor for Place Vendôme houses and owner of its own brand distributed among French jewelry retailers. It was his encounter with tantalum that changed his destiny… He succumbed to its dark gray hue with bluish reflections and launched L’Atelier du Tantale in 2022. His ambition? To redefine the codes of masculine jewelry elegance.

Décideurs. Why did you choose tantalum to launch your new project?
“Tantalum stood out as an obvious choice because it offered an alternative to the established codes of gold or platinum, without ever straying from the demands of authentic luxury. Its deep basalt gray, its density greater than gold, and its almost industrial aura make it a singular metal. Radical and resolutely contemporary, it asserts a strong identity, particularly suited to masculine jewelry.”
What are the properties of tantalum and its treatment possibilities?
“Tantalum, which we use exclusively in its pure form, is dark, heavy, extremely resistant to corrosion and acids, and naturally hypoallergenic. These properties make it an ideal material for everyday rings and wedding bands, designed to be worn for a long time without compromising comfort or durability. It is worked like a true mineral material: sandblasted, hammered, textured, structured with contrasting finishes, and combined with precious metals like gold or platinum. It can undergo a complex heat treatment to blacken its surface.”
Will L’Atelier du Tantale remain an exclusively masculine brand, and will we have the pleasure of discovering set models?
“L’Atelier du Tantale was born with a resolutely masculine aesthetic, around rings, wedding bands, signet rings, and bracelets that highlight the density, color, and textures of tantalum. This positioning will remain foundational. However, we are already working with tantalum in combination with gold, platinum, and diamonds. The customization offered at our jewelers naturally paves the way for more precious models and settings.”
“As we are present in the wedding band market and my career was also built in traditional jewelry, it was only natural to develop a few models of tantalum wedding bands with diamonds for women. The contrast between the dark appearance of tantalum and the brilliance of diamonds is striking: the stone stands out more than with gold or platinum, giving these wedding bands a character that is both radical, feminine, and very contemporary.”
