Indore: The ongoing war between the US, Israel, and Iran is severely affecting the jewelry industry across the country, including Indore. Due to disrupted supplies of commercial LPG gas, production in gas-dependent jewelry manufacturing and designing industries has halted. This has created a livelihood crisis for thousands of jewelry artisans. In Indore, thousands of artisans are currently idle.

Business Halted Due to Affected Gas Supply

Cylinder Prices on Black Market Reach 4,000 Rupees

The price of a 19 kg commercial gas cylinder is approximately 1,991 rupees. It is alleged that jewelry artisans previously bought cylinders on the black market for 2,500 to 3,000 rupees, but after the commercial gas supply was stopped, a cylinder now costs 3,500 to 4,000 rupees on the black market. This has completely halted jewelry manufacturing and designing work.

Hope for War to End

Due to the gas supply halt, jewelry contractors and company representatives are forced to keep artisans idle and pay them wages. In such a situation, they are slowly finishing up other small pending tasks. Artisans said they hope the war situation normalizes soon so that the supply of commercial gas cylinders can resume as before.

Shops on the Verge of Closure

“The cylinder that used to be available for 2,000 rupees is now not available even for 3,500 to 4,000 rupees on the black market. Due to the lack of gas, artisans are sitting idle. Many shops have been locked. Other shops are also on the verge of being locked. We are only finishing old orders. We are not in a position to take any new work because it is impossible to work without gas.” – Vibhash Dhurai, representative of Bengali artisans

“Many shops in the bullion market have closed due to lack of gas. If the situation does not normalize, I may also have to wind up my business here.” – Santu, jewelry artisan

“Due to fluctuations in the gold jewelry market, purchases are already not happening. The impact of the war is clearly visible in the bullion trade. Only needy customers are buying wedding jewelry during the festive season. The situation is such that most artisans also have no work.
