An inherited ring, a piece acquired to celebrate an achievement, or a watch passed from one generation to the next often become more valuable than the material from which they were made. In a world marked by immediacy, jewels continue to represent permanence, memory, and a way of connecting the past with the present.
The pieces chosen by Saura encapsulated much of the house’s savoir-faire: a yellow gold necklace with five emeralds and diamonds, earrings with emeralds and baguette-cut diamonds, a rigid bracelet with a heart-cut diamond, and two rings featuring carefully set emeralds and diamonds. Beyond their material value, each creation reflected the goldsmith tradition that has accompanied the firm since 1886, when Pedro Durán Morales opened his first workshop in Madrid after training in Santiago de Compostela, the Spanish capital, and Paris.
This idea was present during the celebration of DURÁN’s 140th anniversary, the historic Spanish house of silverware, jewelry, art, and auctions, which gathered prominent figures from culture, fashion, film, and politics at the Hotel Mandarin Oriental Ritz in Madrid. The evening was hosted by Mar Saura, who served as master of ceremonies, reviewing some of the firm’s most important milestones. For the occasion, the model, actress, and presenter wore a design by Nué Studio, Casadei sandals, and a spectacular selection of DURÁN High Jewelry valued at over two million euros, under the stylistic direction of Víctor Blanco.
DURÁN’s story is also the story of how a craft can evolve without losing its essence. From its time as a supplier to the Royal House to the creation of Spain’s first art auction room in 1969, the company has managed to combine innovation and tradition across four generations. Today, under the leadership of Juan Miguel Albarracín Durán, the group continues to expand its universe through jewelry, watchmaking, art, and contemporary design.
Perhaps that is why jewelry continues to occupy such a special place. A piece may shine because of its precious stones or the complexity of its execution, but over the years it acquires an even deeper value: that of the stories it holds. DURÁN’s 140th anniversary was a celebration of that legacy, of the craftsmanship that spans generations, and of those jewels capable of enduring long after a gala night ends.
