**Editor’s Note:** This article highlights Tiffany & Co.’s Japan-exclusive high jewelry collection and installation, celebrating the first anniversary of its Tiffany Ginza flagship store. The collection pays homage to the iconic “Bird on a Rock” design, showcasing the brand’s creativity and craftsmanship.
Tiffany & Co. will unveil a Japan-exclusive high jewelry collection and a special installation to commemorate the first anniversary of its flagship store, Tiffany Ginza, which opened on July 11, 2025. This collection embodies the brand’s creativity and exceptional craftsmanship, inspired by the iconic “Bird on a Rock” created by Jean Schlumberger in 1965.
Celebrating the delicate transitions and emotions of Japan’s four seasons, four unique Bird on a Rock brooches have been created, each representing spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The iconic design of a bird alighting on a gemstone has been reinterpreted through Japan’s natural beauty and poetic sensibility. From gemstone selection to every meticulous detail, the essence of each season is richly expressed. Each brooch is a one-of-a-kind creation resulting from close collaboration between Nathalie Verdeille, Senior Vice President and Chief Artistic Officer of Jewelry and High Jewelry, and Victoria Reynolds, Vice President and Chief Gemologist.
The piece representing “Spring” features morganite, a gemstone with an elegant color reminiscent of Japan’s cherry blossoms. Named by Dr. George F. Kunz, Tiffany’s chief gemologist in 1910, this gemstone symbolizes love and success. Its soft radiance delicately reflects the poetic tranquility and gentleness of spring in Japan.
The “Summer” piece features an oval cabochon black opal with a mesmerizing play of color. This gemstone shimmers with changing hues when exposed to light, evoking the vibrant colors of summer. Custom-cut turquoise and diamonds harmonize beautifully, recalling a midsummer sea sparkling under sunlight, expressing the vitality of the season.
For “Autumn,” an orange-pink tourmaline symbolizing abundance serves as the center stone. Tourmaline, known for its diverse colors, has long been a symbol of hope. Its vivid, deep hues evoke ripe fruits and blazing autumn leaves, capturing the deepening autumn landscape.
The “Winter” piece features a free-form crystal opal weighing over 40 carats. This rare gemstone is characterized by exceptional transparency and vivid play of color. It reveals different expressions depending on the angle of light, emitting a particularly beautiful radiance that conveys both the stillness and hope of winter.
On the first floor of Tiffany Ginza, a limited-time special installation will be presented alongside the Japan-exclusive high jewelry, interpreting summer through two perspectives. Created by Christopher Young, Vice President and Creative Director of Tiffany Patrimony and Creative Visual Merchandising, the installation expresses the poetic sensibility of Japanese summer and the vibrant energy of New York summer.
Historical pieces selected from the archives will also be on display, including a tray combining different materials exhibited at Tiffany’s award-winning display at the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle, and a special necklace created under the supervision of Louis Comfort Tiffany. This necklace, first exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français exhibition in Paris in 1906, is one of his earliest surviving works.
The four Japan-exclusive “Bird on a Rock” pieces will be on display on the first floor of Tiffany Ginza from July 8 to July 17. Under the message “In Love with Japan,” Tiffany celebrates the store’s first anniversary and pays tribute to the cherished bond it has cultivated with Japan.
