And it’s precisely from there that we draw inspiration in 2026: a material that was absolutely trendy in her youth is now making a grand comeback—and becoming the star of our spring nails.
In spring 2026, tortoiseshell nails are in. They look elegant, retro, and thanks to their beautiful brown tones, absolutely trend-proof (after all, brown is THE it-color of 2026). The classic tortoiseshell pattern is slightly transparent and shimmers with its brown spots in a naturally warm way.
The tortoiseshell pattern was originally inspired by the shells of certain sea turtles, from which jewelry and accessories were once made. Fortunately, these animals have been protected since 1973—so when we see the pattern today on sunglasses or similar accessories, it is, of course, an artificially produced version. And it can now be imitated so easily that the characteristic pattern is also perfect as a stylish inspiration for a winter manicure.
To recreate tortoiseshell nails at home, we recommend working with UV nail polishes and a lamp, as you need to apply several layers. To avoid long waiting times, it’s faster to cure the special polish under a UV or LED lamp.
First, apply a layer of a milky white nail polish as a base. Then, we need a slightly transparent orange nail polish, applied in one layer over the white. Using a brush, distribute small dots of a dark brown shade on the nail. After this dries, add a few drops of black nail polish over parts of the brown, so that the brown is still visible. Finally, apply a slightly transparent brown layer over the nails. If this seems too much effort or you don’t trust yourself to do it alone, simply take some inspiration pictures to your trusted nail salon.
