FIFA’s latest gimmick to fuel the hype around the 2026 World Cup final is a piece of jewelry made of gold and diamonds: a limited edition of 2,026 pieces, of which 30 will be given to the winning team (players and staff), and the rest put on sale, likely at a monstrous price.
The rhetoric matches the aesthetics, where sobriety is not exactly the benchmark. And on the other hand, we couldn’t have expected anything different, given the models it draws inspiration from. The champions’ ring is part of American sports tradition. Every year, the winners of the NBA Finals or the Super Bowl are also rewarded with a very flashy band made of gold (usually yellow or rose) and precious stones, from diamonds to rubies, engraved with the logo and name of the team and championship. These are jewelry pieces worth sums with several zeros. As reported by specialized American sites, their production cost ranges from $30,000 to $50,000 – depending on carats, stones set, craftsmanship, etc. – but has also reached $150,000. This means that a collector at auction can end up paying over $900,000 for them.
This is the case of the ring from the 2000 NBA title of the Los Angeles Lakers, given by Kobe Bryant to his father Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, sold at auction in 2024 for $927,000. The value of replicas for the retail fan market is quite different: in that case, it drops to $100-$500.
But let’s get to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. FIFA has not mentioned either the materials or the price of the sparkler, merely specifying that “on one side it will feature the trophy, the other will be personalized to reflect the identity of the winning team. Each ring,” it states, “will be individually numbered, custom-made, and delivered with its own certificate of authenticity.”
According to photos, it will be made of yellow gold, studded with diamonds and sapphires, following the aesthetic of the chevalier ring with a bezel setting, which recalls the medieval tradition where the ring was also a ‘seal’ of something: promise, authenticity. The value depends not only on materials and design, but also on rarity and symbolic meaning. Difficult to monetize. Here too, industry magazines hypothesize that its cost is not far from that of other sports leagues. On par with NBA and NFL rings, the World Cup ring could reach $150,000. The Daily Mail even hypothesizes a price, for the 1,996 destined for sale, of £110,000 (the equivalent of about $150,000, €130,000). Not exactly for every budget.
